Issues Regarding the Application of a Mass-Balance Equation to an Urban Creek

Abstract
Uniroyal Chemical Ltd. (Uniroyal) operates a chemical manufacturing facility in Elmira, Ontario (hereinafter referred to as “the site”). Contaminated groundwater from beneath some areas of the site discharges to Canagagigue Creek, which flows through the site. As part of a proposal to contain a portion of this groundwater, the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy (MOEE) required Uniroyal to prepare a contaminant loading model that would estimate the improvement in surface water quality following implementation of the groundwater containment system. This chapter describes the preparation of this model, which was developed by Conestoga-Rovers & Associates (CRA) on behalf of Uniroyal.
