On Integrating Continous Simulation and Statistical Methods for Evaluating Urban Stormwater Systems
Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss various approaches for estimating the pollutant removal by urban stormwater detention systems. After a brief description of detention basins and their components, the characteristics of the flow and its quality are described, including the effect of covariance between flow and concentration. Solids removal processes are discussed briefly. Various modelling approaches for estimating pollutant removal effectiveness are compared, including single storm event simulation, continuous simulation of multiple storm events, statistical methods for evaluating pollutant removal effectiveness, and spreadsheet-based approaches which include Monte Carlo simulation. The pros and cons of the various approaches are described, and a simple example is used to illustrate the potential integration of these approaches. This chapter reviews the topic rather than develops a hard-and-fast methodology.
