DEM Applications in Hydrologic Modeling

Abstract
This chapter shows how digital elevation models (DEM) can be used to develop hydrologic models using off-the-shelf GIS software. A review of DEM analysis software is presented. The chapter shows how to automatically delineate watershed subbasins and streams using DEMs. A case study is presented to compare the DEM results with the conventional manual delineation approach. It is found that for rural and moderately hilly watersheds, 30 m resolution DEMs are appropriate for automatic delineation of watershed subbasins and streams. For 30 m DEMs a cell threshold of 500 is appropriate.
